General Tso's Chicken

This tasty sweet, spicy, and tangy General Tso’s Chicken with a crispy coating is a popular classic Chinese-American take-out favorite! But you can easily make this recipe and produce a restaurant-quality good dish at home in just a few simple steps in under 30 minutes!

Ingredients

Sauce

  • ½ cup chicken broth low sodium
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce low sodium
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin suace
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Chicken

  • 1 pound chicken thighs boneless and skinless, cut into bite size pieces
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoons ginger minced
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a small bowl combine all the sauce ingredients together and set aside.

  • In another bowl add the chicken pieces and cornstarch. Toss well to combine, making sure the chicken is fully covered in cornstarch.

  • Add 1 to 2 inches of oil in a large skillet and heat to 350°F. Add the chicken to the hot oil and cook until crispy brown and cooked through, about 5 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate.

  • Drain the oil from the skillet and return the skillet to heat. Add the garlic, ginger and red pepper flakes to the skillet and cook for 30 seconds to a minute until fragrant.

  • Pour in the sauce and stir. Cook until the sauce thickens. Add the chicken back to the skillet and the green onions. Toss well to coat the chicken.

  • Serve garnished with additional green onions, sesame seeds and serve over rice.

Notes

  1. Fry the chicken in batches. For the chicken to evenly cook and fry properly it’s important not to crowd the pan. So unless you are using an extra large skillet it’s best to cook it in batches. 
  2. Don’t burn the aromatics. The garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes just need to saute for about 30 seconds to become fragrant. Any longer and you risk burning them which will affect the taste of the dish.
  3. Temp the chicken. For food safety, you can easily make sure that your fried chicken is fully cooked by using an instant-read digital meat thermometer to ensure that it has reached at least 165°F (74°C).
  4. Leftover General Tso’s chicken will keep for up to 4 days in the fridge or up to 3 months in the freezer in an airtight container.
