I just love having easy and accessible dessert recipes at arm’s length so whenever my sweet tooth starts talking I already have everything I need to get started. The cherry filling is so versatile, you can have it in your freezer all ready to jump in on the action. And what better way to make your heart sing with joy than with a tasty sweet slice of cake and some vanilla ice cream on the side.

Why Dump Cake?

Well, as the title says it, you basically dump all the ingredients in one baking dish and that’s it! The convenience to this cake is, you don’t need many ingredients to make it and you don’t need many tools either. Three ingredients, a few easy steps and an hour to bake it. Ta-daa! Easy-peasy.

Ingredient Notes

overhead shot of ingredients needed to make cherry dump cake.
  • Cherry Pie Filling – I love to use cherry filling because it just works so well with this cake. Other pie fillings you can use are blueberry pie filling, peach, apple, whatever you like.
  • Cake Mix – I used one box of the yellow cake mix, linked in the recipe box below. You can also make your own using my recipe.
  • Butter – You’ll need melted butter so it blends well with the rest of the ingredients.

How to Make Cherry Dump Cake

process shots showing how to make cherry dump cake.
  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Assemble the cake: Spread the cherry pie filling evenly over the bottom of the baking dish. Sprinkle with cake mix over the cherries, evenly. Drizzle with melted butter over the surface of the cake mix. Don’t worry, you won’t have enough to drizzle over the entire surface.
  3. Bake: Bake for up to 1 hour or until golden brown.
  4. Serve: Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.

FAQ’s and Expert Tips

FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cherry dump cake have to be refrigerated?

You can serve cherry dump cake hot out of the oven. Keep the “dump it” theme going and just scoop a big pile into a bowl with your favorite vanilla ice cream!

Do you stir a dump cake?

For some reason, nearly every dump cake recipe insists that the ingredients are not to be stirred. In fact, most recipes add extra emphasis to this instruction: you don’t need to stir it.

Tips

  1. Don’t overthink this cake. It’s as easy as it sounds and definitely more versatile than you expect it to be. With just the three easy ingredients, you can’t go wrong when you make it and it’s a delicious and fast dessert.
  2. Serve it warm or cold, this cake is best with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Storage

Once the cake’s cooled, you can store it in the fridge covered tightly with plastic wrap for up to 5 days.
