Instant Pot Rice is a quick and easy side dish. It requires no tinkering, stirring, peeking, and works with any variety of rice. Best part? It’s done in your Instant Pot! No fail, fool-proof recipe!
If you guys didn’t believe me when I said before that you can do anything in your instant pot, you’re about to. Rice is such a staple for so many kitchens around the world and at this point cooking it is down to a science. But allow me to show you how to make delicious, fluffy rice in your Instant Pot!
My old trusty rice cooker typically cooks my rice in around 20 minutes but its been collecting dust on the shelf ever since I discovered that I can make this starchy staple just as well in my pressure cooker. I love cooking rice in my Instant Pot because it really is hands off, and it really does take all the guesswork out of cooking rice.
You can use any rice variety that you prefer for this dish! From jasmine to basmati, sushi to sticky, wild rice to brown rice, the opportunities are endless!
Ingredients
- Rice – I used Jasmine rice which I highly recommend for this dish. Fragrant and long grain, it’s the perfect base for this dish. Feel free to substitute with whatever rice you’d like but keep in mind it may affect cooking times.
- Water – Straight from the tap!
- Oil – Olive oil is what I used today, feel free to substitute avocado, canola, safflower, or coconut in its place.
- Seasoning – Just some salt, it’s key to incorporate a bit of flavor.
How To Make Instant Pot Rice
- Rinse the rice under cold running water until the water runs clear.
- Combine the rice: Add the rice, water, olive oil and salt to your instant pot. Lock the lid and set the steam valve to “sealing” position.
- Cook the rice: Press the “rice” button or set on manual for 5 minutes. Once the Instant Pot cycle is complete, wait until the natural release cycle is complete, should take about 10 minutes. Remove the lid, fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
Rinsing Your Rice Is Key
We need to keep in mind the amount of starch that clings to all those uncooked grains of rice and how that affects the way it cooks. By rinsing this starch off we prevent the rice from sticking together as it cooks and allows it to fluff up properly without becoming gummy.
STRAINER
- Use a fine mesh strainer and rinse your rice in the sink till the water runs clear. Shake the rice and stir your hand through it in a circular motion.
BOWL
- Fill a bowl with your rice and cold water and stir your hand through in a circular motion 30 times. Drain the cloudy water.
- Repeat this till the water runs clear.
How To Serve
This nice starchy side dish pairs perfectly with just about anything and everything I’ve found. I like to pair it with anything I’d like to bulk up a bit, to turn a main into a full blown meal!

Storing Leftovers
Be sure to store the rice as soon as it’s cooled as rice is a breeding ground for bacteria. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 – 4 days.
Freezer
If freezing store the rice in a freezer bag with the air pressed out. Thaw overnight in the fridge and fluff the rice before reheating. The rice will last up to 3 months in the freezer.
