Ingredient Notes
- Bread – We want thick slices of 2 day old bread. Ideally something like white bread, Challah or brioche.
- Milk – Any kind of milk you’d like!
- Eggs – We need 6 large eggs, they are very important for forming our french toast batter and ensuring our bread crisps up properly.
- Seasoning – Vanilla extract and cinnamon are grand staples to bring out the right flavor of this French toast.
How to Make French Toast
- Form the egg mixture: In a shallow bowl beat the eggs, milk, vanilla extract and cinnamon together.
- Preheat skillet: Preheat your skillet over medium-low heat and melt in 2 tbsp of butter.
- Soak the bread: Take each slice of bread and dip it into the egg mixture, and allow the bread to soak up some of the mixture. Add 2 or 3 slices of bread into the skillet or as many as you can fit and fry the bread until brown on both sides. Repeat with remaining bread slices, adding more butter to the skillet as necessary.
- Finish the dish: Serve hot with butter, maple syrup and fresh berries.
Frequently Asked Questions
While you can use any bread you’d like, ideally I recommend the use of either Texas Toast, Brioche or Challah.
Try to not overdo the dairy. If there’s too much milk, the egg in the mixture won’t cook, resulting in wet, soggy, bread. You want the French toast to be dry on the surface with slightly crisp edges.
Aim for medium-low heat so that the inside can cook and the outside will still get golden-brown and nicely caramelized. Follow this tip: Heat your griddle or frying pan to medium-low before cooking the French toast so it’s perfectly cooked on both the outside and inside.
Expert Tips
- One of the most important things that can really enhance your toast is the syrup. If you’re going to go all out and get good quality bread for this recipe, definitely splurge on some real maple syrup as well.
- A skillet, seasoned cast iron, or griddle are the best options for making French toast as it allows our bread to crisp up perfectly and evenly.
- Make sure the eggs and milk are fresh so you can get the best results when you cook everything.
